Hughes STEM High School was established as a teacher-led school operating under the AFT affiliate contract, but with the ability to negotiate waivers. The union contract itself provides pro-autonomy structure called the ILT (Instructional Leadership Team) which is democratically run and co-chaired by an elected teacher and the principal. Authority is broad, as nearly anything that affects instruction can be voted up or down by that body, and the principal does not have veto power.

About the Learning Program

At the Hughes STEM High School, we have embraced the view that academic content should not be taught in isolation. Students will be immersed in rich, meaningful, STEM experiences through interdisciplinary coursework applied in the context of the real world through business and community partnerships. In these workplace experiences, students will not only learn to apply knowledge, but they will also learn about a wide range of STEM careers, develop professional communication skills, and develop their ability to apply technology to real world situations. In short, the Hughes STEM High School will lead students to develop the skills that they will need in order to succeed in the 21st century.
