De jure teachers’ authority is granted via charter contract with district and waivers from union. De facto the teachers select their colleagues, although the district retains the right to fill unfilled positions.

About the Learning Program

The Downtown Institute of Arts and Letters (DIAL High School) is a rigorous, year-round arts and humanities high school with a curriculum emphasizing multicultural Great Books and Advanced Placement course preparation. DIAL features a downtown campus offering a flexible, modular class schedule. Students audition in six art areas: Art, Creative Writing, Dance, Film & Video, Instrumental Music-Orchestra/Jazz, and Theatre.
