About the Inventory
We maintain this inventory to help strengthen the network of teacher-powered schools by allowing schools to find one another, and to help us track and understand the growing national movement.
We regularly discover schools, are referred to schools, or are contacted by schools who believe they could be described as teacher-powered and would like to be added to our inventory. When we learn of such a school, we seek to understand:
- Does the collective group of teachers have final authority to make decisions at the school (as opposed to an advisory role)? We evaluate teachers’ level of authority in fifteen areas of autonomy.
- How does the group of teachers get its authority? We’ve found that there are a variety of ways in which teachers get authority.
We include a school in our inventory if the teacher team at that school has final authority in at least one of the fifteen autonomy areas. Schools often have a mix of full, partial, or no autonomy in each of the 15 specific areas. To see the autonomies for each school, you can view each school’s inventory profile.
This inventory will always be a work in progress, and what is reported here is based on what we have learned from email or phone interviews with teachers at the individual schools at the time of our interview. There are some schools we know to be teacher-powered, but have not yet been able to interview. They are included on the inventory and shown to be "not evaluated by TPSI".
If you notice any errors, or would like to suggest a school to be added to this inventory, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
